Fuqua goes 2-0

The Fuqua School varsity football team returned from its bye week to produce its second high-scoring, blowout triumph in as many games.
The Falcons followed up their season-opening 66-35 victory over host Greenbrier Christian Academy on Sept. 2 with a 50-7 victory over visiting Virginia Episcopal School on Friday night.
“Some of that was we were just better than them, and some of that was our kids made some great plays,” Fuqua Head Coach Ben Manis said of his team’s latest win. “We’ve still got plenty of stuff to clean up, and our schedule only gets harder from here on out, so I’m interested to see what happens as we keep going.”
The coach said the big advantage his players had against Virginia Episcopal was their experience playing with each other.
“Just the fact that my guys have been together for so long, we can make subtle changes on the fly just because they know each other, and they know how to communicate with each other well,” Manis said.
He also noted his team lined up in some formations the Bishops likely had not seen yet and were not ready for.
“We lined up in a couple different looks that kind of spread them out, and they were really trying to pack the box on us,” Manis said. “I think we did pretty decent throwing the ball to help alleviate some of that pressure. Some of our receivers are starting to come a long way. Each game, they’re getting better. So, having a senior quarterback helps a lot, and I think he’s certainly gained trust with some of those guys.”
That senior quarterback is Devin Allen, who went 8-for-17 passing Friday for 126 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
“After we got up on them, we quit throwing the ball,” Manis said.
The Falcons gained 336 yards on the ground, led by Jeffrey Fariss, who registered 10 carries for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Allen had seven carries for 63 yards and a touchdown and Ben Bailey gained 68 yards on 10 carries and also had a touchdown catch.
Ed Newman had four rushes for 56 yards and a touchdown, as well as three catches for 37 yards and a score. Tyler Thomas added two catches for 36 yards and a touchdown.
Nicholas Fariss had a solid game as Fuqua’s kicker and hit a 30-yard field goal.
Billy French led the Falcons defense with six solo tackles, one assist and one interception. Warren Dabney had five solo tackles and Bailey also had an interception.
Fuqua returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. when it is set to host Hampton Roads Academy.
