A new American Civil War Museum series, “Civil War Conversations” will kick off Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of the Confederacy in Appomattox, 159 Horseshoe Road.

The new series will feature presentations by regional experts on the American Civil War in a relaxed, intimate setting.

According to Stephanie Arduini, museum director of education and programs, the series is designed to expand visitors’ knowledge of the Civil War and its legacies, especially around the Appomattox area.

“We want to provide visitors with a much deeper understanding of the war, and surprise them with unexpected connections,” she explained.

“Whether we’re telling the remarkable story of Elizabeth Keckley, analyzing the long-term legal ramifications of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, or exploring the ups and downs of Stonewall Jackson’s youth and how they influenced his decisions in battle.”

Before each program, attendees can interact with the program presenter and each other discussing Civil War topics.

Visitors also are encouraged to ask questions and discuss topics raised during the presentation.

“These are intended to be very laid back and comfortable and to encourage conversation, much more informal than the typical lecture series,” Arduini said.

Also, Bob Sayre of the museum will explore ways in which reconstruction policies affected the country following the devastation of four years of war.

Tickets for individual programs are $10 per person.

Series passes for all nine programs are $75 per person. Member discounts are available.

Reservations are suggested, and seating is limited.

Tickets also are available at the door if seating is available.
