Christopher Newport tops H-SC on gridiron, 45-27

Christopher Newport University’s football team spoiled Hampden-Sydney College’s 2016 home opener on Saturday, handing the Tigers a 45-27 loss at Fulton Field.

On the day, the Tigers tallied 356 yards of offense, with 282 passing and 74 rushing. Alec Cobb (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) was 26-of-42 for 274 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Cam Johnson (Dillwyn/Buckingham) caught a team-high seven passes for 83 yards and a score, while Carter Cunningham (Farmville/Fuqua) had a strong outing with six catches for 100 yards to go with five carries for 19 yards. Owen Costello (South Riding/Paul VI) had five catches for 43 yards and a score. Mike DeMasi (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) carried the run game with 62 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

H-SC freshman Matt DeMasi (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second consecutive week, this time for 93 yards.

Defensively, the Tigers allowed 557 yards of total offense, with 355 coming through the air and 202 on the ground. Bender Vaught (Ashland/Patrick Henry) led H-SC with nine tackles, while Jamal Woolridge (Chester/Thomas Dale) recorded eight, including one for a loss, and a forced fumble.

The Tigers (0-2) return to the road Saturday, playing against Ferrum College at Salem Stadium at 1 p.m.
