The legacy of the 2016 Prince Edward-Farmville Youth Association (PEFYA) Debs is set. It was largely set before they played even a second of the Dixie Softball Debs World Series in Alexandria, La., this past weekend.

The Debs were eliminated from the World Series after losing their first two games, but will be remembered in the community for their unprecedented habit of winning.

They became the first PEFYA team ever to win the Debs State Championship, going 5-0 in the 12-team tournament. The achievement also made them the first PEFYA Debs team ever to advance to the World Series.

They earned the right to play among the best of the best in all of Dixie Softball, and the way the World Series bracket is unfolding, it appears they may have literally done so.

The PEFYA Debs played the host team, Alexandria; and Florida. Both teams made it to the final four, and Alexandria played for the championship Wednesday.

At the state and World Series levels, PEFYA was playing in a field including all-star teams. But forming an all-star team was not an option for PEFYA, which had only 12 Debs players this year.

Twelve proved to be all that was necessary to make history. They are:

• Alexa Marzloff,

• Maddie Moreland,

• Abby Roach,

• Hannah-Gray Schmidt,

• Melissa Wright.
