When the Longwood University baseball team welcomes its new group of freshman to campus in the fall, the Lancers will bring in four players who were on state championship teams in 2016.

Infielder Nate Blakeney (Wesleyan Christian Academy/ High Point, N.C.), right-handed pitcher Tyler Morgan (Hanover High School/ Mechanicsville), left-handed pitcher and first baseman John Gregory (Hanover/ Mechanicsville) and catcher Joey Mendez (Riverdale Baptist School/ Upper Marlboro, Md.) all won state championships in 2016 in their final prep seasons before joining Longwood for the 2016-17 scholastic year.

Overall the Lancers will welcome eight freshman in 2017, also including first team all-conference outfielder Travis Riley (Massaponax High School/ Spotsylvania), Antwaun Tucker (Bluestone High School/ Skipwith), Scott Carter (Goochland High School/ Goochland) and Grant Keller (Midlothian High School/ Midlothian). The eight-player class, a largely successful group, joins the Lancers after Longwood set the school record in the Division I era with 32 wins.
