Douglas MacArthur ‘Mack’ Oakes

Douglas MacArthur “Mack” Oakes, born October 30, 1943 passed away at home on June 15, 2016 after a long and hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Estelle Morris Oakes and Howard G. Oakes and his sister, Phyllis Oakes Martin. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mabel Thorpe Oakes; two daughters, Pamela Oakes Atkins and husband, Stephen and Tracey Oakes O’Brien and husband, Bill; three grandchildren, Raven Wilson Oakes-Harris, Ashley Harris Bain, and Jamie Katherine Morris; four siblings, Bobby Oakes and wife, Vickie, June Oakes Thomas and husband, Bill and James “Danny” Oakes and wife, Gloria and Norman Oakes and wife, Rita; 18 nieces and nephews and many numerous wonderful friends.

Mack was a native of Rice and had traveled the east coast as a lineman. He retired from Southside Electric Cooperative in 1999 and spent his retirement gardening, hunting, fishing and occasionally bringing home stray cats. Not much grass grew under his feet as he always liked to be busy.

A funeral service was held on Monday, June 20 in the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.
