The 31st Annual James River Batteau Festival wound down on Saturday after floating for seven days atop Virginia’s largest river. Evening stops for the 17th-century flat-bottomed wooden boats included Bent Creek, Wingina, Howardsville, Scottsville, Slate River and Cartersville. The bateaux began their journey at Percival’s Island and ended at Maiden’s Landing. Pictured, The Spirit of Buckingham, led by Captain Roy Turner, navigates through a turbulent part of the river. Turner is assisted by other crewmembers, including Brian Staton.
