The date is fast approaching when the iconic Longwood Golf Course will close to citizens. Will many people notice when it happens? Will many grieve?

In spite of the valiant efforts of the committee dedicated to its preservation, and in spite of protests by many, many people, the course is scheduled to close with no clear reason ever being given.

Yes, there have been several reasons put forth — some real and some imaginary. The trouble is, there have been so many conflicting reports, it is impossible to tell what is real and what is not.

One reason given is that Farmville cannot support three golf courses. Those who believe this don’t know much about golf. This notion is based on the erroneous idea that playing golf on these three courses is the same. This is not true. Each golf course is unique in the layout of its holes. Some holes have hazards. Some do not. Some are straight. Some are not. Some are long, some are short. 

Each course provides the golfer a unique experience.

It makes no sense to argue that Farmville can’t support three courses. They are not alike. With competent management and innovative programming, each could thrive. Thus the reason for closing the Longwood course can’t be blamed on the other two golf courses.

That would not make sense.

Don’t you wonder what the real reason is? Could it be just an administrative whim?
