Did you know High Bridge Trail is a paradise of pegmatite, granite and amphibolite? Now that your geologic pulse is racing, consider coming to High Bridge Trail for a ride with State Geologist David Spears on Thursday, May 19.

Join the van tour along the trail between Moran and Farmville to learn about geological features that were exposed by the construction of the South Side Rail Road in the early 1850s.

Spears will explain the significance of certain areas and formations as participants stop to get a closer look. “Overall, the rocks are mostly metamorphosed volcanic rocks that originated as an offshore volcanic island chain half a billion years ago,” Spears said. “The volcanic islands were pressed up against North America during tectonic plate collisions 300 or 400 million years ago. Geologically, this is a mysterious part of the Virginia piedmont where very little work has been done to understand the age and origin of the rocks.”

The tour is planned for participants to meet at the Main Street Trail Plaza in Farmville at 10 a.m. with a targeted return time of 2 p.m. In addition to exploring the geologic attractions, participants will cross the High Bridge and have lunch nearby.
