CHS boys lead on track

The Cumberland County High School boys track team led all boys teams in points after conclusion of the field events portion of the 2016 James River District Track and Field Championships on Monday at Nottoway High School.

Senior Timothy Jackson took first in the shot put and the discus throw to lead the way for the Dukes.

Cumberland junior Jaylen Gilliam took third in the shot put. Taking fourth for the Dukes was senior Darius Jackson in the shot put and the discus throw, senior Daquan Trent in the triple jump and freshman Ziahir Berry in the long jump.

Dukes junior Tyruss Sims placed sixth in the shot put, and freshman Jalen Foster was sixth in the triple jump. Trent took seventh in the long jump and the high jump, and Berry placed ninth in the triple jump.

Prince Edward County High School’s boys track team was second out of six teams after the field events, generating 35 points.

Eagles junior Rajai Walton won the long jump, he placed second in the high jump and third in the triple jump. Junior Markeem Trent claimed second in the shot put. Senior Lionel Bowles took fifth in the triple jump, while junior Juan Craft-Wise placed sixth in the discus throw and eighth in the shot put.

While Bluestone High School led all girls teams with 50 points after Monday’s field events, Prince Edward County High School sat in second with 27 points.

Lady Eagles freshman Salma Muhammad took second in the triple jump, and fellow freshman Jordan Booker took third. Sophomore Asia Wilson placed third in the high jump, and sophomore Haleema Muhammad placed fourth in the shot put.

Sophomore Tra’liyna Dabney finished fifth in the high jump, senior Tanasia Miller claimed sixth in the long jump and Salma Muhammad claimed seventh.

The girls teams for Cumberland and Buckingham County High Schools are tied for fourth with 19 points apiece.

Lady Dukes senior Ebony Jones won the triple jump and also placed fourth in the long jump. Junior Tonishea Ford finished fourth in the discus throw, while freshman Nadia Elasha claimed sixth.

For the Lady Knights, senior Jamiyah Gough took second in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump.

Freshman Tamiyah Gough placed fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump. Senior Tyronae Brown claimed fourth place in the high jump.

Buckingham’s boys team did not generate any points on the day.

The running events portion of the district track and field championships were scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Prince Edward County High School.
