The only thing in life that’s final is death. I would like for Longwood University President W. Taylor Reveley IV and the Board of Visitors to reconsider closing to the public the Longwood Golf Course. 

My experience with the Longwood Golf Course dates back to mid-1960s. I was a caddie then but was not allowed to play golf at that time because of my skin color. I had some unpleasant experiences as a caddie at Longwood that I will outline in my upcoming book, titled “Joy & Pain.” 

Some may be surprised that I am not celebrating Longwood’s decision to close it. In fact, I want the university to reconsider its decision and keep it open.

At the March meeting of the Farmville Area Chamber Commerce, I asked Reveley why the Longwood Golf Course was being closed. He stated the course is being closed to the public only.  He also stated that Longwood Golf Course was not a financial burden to the school’s budget. 

I am a member of the Longwood Golf Course and enjoy walking and playing golf some weekday mornings before going to work and sometimes going back after work to walk and play for physical exercise and game improvement.

The Longwood Golf Course serves as a good place for people from all walks of life to play golf and fellowship with one other.

Longwood can show that it is truly a good neighbor and is concerned about local golfers. I feel that keeping the course open will be in the best interest of this community.
