The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting all people to pray for our nation. This day has been a vital part of our heritage since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming this nation. 

This call to prayer has continued throughout our history as America has turned to God in times of peace and in conflict. President George Washington, on Oct. 3, 1789, stressed the significance of prayer in this Thanksgiving Proclamation: “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits and humbly to implore His protection and favor.” In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a “day of public humiliation, fasting and prayer.” Congress established a National Day of Prayer as an annual event in 1952 and it was signed into law by President Harry Truman.

The National Day of Prayer belongs to all Americans. It is a day that transcends differences, bringing together citizens from all political and ethnic backgrounds.

As the National Day of Prayer is observed on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., and in many other places, this year, people in Farmville and surrounding areas will have the chance to join with millions of other Americans. 

Heritage Baptist Church is inviting the community to gather in their sanctuary for a time of prayer. On Thursday, May 5, between 7 a.m.-7 p.m., come by and pray.
