As an active member of the Muslim-American community, I am deeply saddened by the recent senseless acts of terrorism in Brussels and Turkey.

History has shown that hatred, bigotry, racial, social and economic injustice cannot survive in our ever-advancing global community. A cursory view of events surrounding Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, South African apartheid, women’s rights and slavery in America bear witness to this simple truth.

Unfortunately, there are influential people in American society who are attempting to fan the flames of hatred and social partitioning by suggesting that all Muslims should be viewed as a potential threat to our national security. In so doing, their goal is to win support for their political agendas. This too is sad because history clearly provides evidence that meaningful and long-lasting societal change is only achieved through collective cooperation toward a common goal.

In our scripture, the Almighty says, “O People of the Book, come to common terms between us and you (3:64).” This verse reminds people of the Abrahamic faiths (Christians, Jews and Muslims) to work cooperatively for the advancement of human society. Historically, this mutual cooperative spirit has been the catalyst for positive change and human justice.

To end the violence and suffering that we are witnessing today requires cooperation, compassion and a concern for others irrespective of their religious faiths.

All God-fearing people have the same concerns: love, security and well-being for their families, human justice and self-dignity. Working cooperatively to achieve these common values is a goal that we all share.
