Before I moved to Farmville, I worked as a hospital administrator for a very large, nationwide health-care corporation. During that time, I worked and lived in many small communities across the United States. When I arrived here, I can honestly say that I knew that Farmville was by far the best one.
Having Longwood University in the heart of the community and having the Longwood University Golf Course also in the heart of the community was a terrific plus.
To be a part of the historical university and a member of the Longwood Golf Course have been tremendous pluses as well.
My experiences on many small and large golf courses have helped me to truly appreciate the great value of the Longwood course. As a player, the narrow fairways and other unique qualities have helped me to appreciate more the value of this particular course.
My appreciation grew greater when I began to learn of the history of the course. This course was founded on the principles and practices initiated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
It was built with the hands of individuals who benefited from the Works Progress Administration program some 80 years ago.
It is my sincere hope that the portion of the current Longwood Master Plan that calls for the closing of the Longwood Golf Course can be re-evaluated and perhaps removed or revised to save this very valuable community and university asset.
