Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park will host a series of commemorative activities involving period-dressed living historians, volunteers, dignitaries and park staff on Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., for the 151st anniversary of the Battles of Sailor’s Creek.
Visitors will experience Civil War soldier encampments, black powder tactical demonstrations, Federal cavalry troops, living history portrayals of civilian life and a war-time field hospital at the historic Hillsman House. A special dedication ceremony will be held for the official opening of the new Pickett Trail, a hiking trail loop with historical markers located at the Marshall’s Crossroads section of the Battlefield and named for Confederate Major General George E. Pickett, who fought on the grounds encompassed by the new trail.
The 151st anniversary commemoration is a free, family and pet-friendly event. Contact the park’s visitor center at (804) 561-7510, or email sailorscreek@dcr.virginia.gov for questions.
The award-winning Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
