Issues must be addressed

Board members of the taxpayer-funded Crossroads Community Services agency owe it to their clients, employees, but more important, the community, to publicly address the personnel matter that’s reportedly stopped programs and caused a divide in the organization.
On Feb. 23, two staff members expressed contempt to the board about the agency — citing a loss of programs, a “huge divide” between management and staff and a “chaotic, toxic and hostile” work environment.
The comments of Mary Jackson, an employee of 16 years, and Nellie Parrish, an employee of about eight years, stem from the termination of four employees on Jan. 20 by Executive Director Dr. Susan Baker, prompting a state investigation. Baker called the action a reduction in force.
Thousands of our most vulnerable neighbors, friends and family members rely on Crossroads daily for care across Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway and Prince Edward counties.
They are owed an explanation more than anyone else.
Parrish said during the meeting that productivity had decreased and job responsibilities and performance expectations were unclear. In time, this — if it already hasn’t — will affect the services and care our community receives.
Crossroads is a vital part of our community. Before the divide at the agency widens, allowing members of our community to fall between the cracks of health care, the board needs to publicly address this.
