Several years ago I was invited to a luncheon in Lynchburg. I was lucky enough to be seated at the same table as Dr. Jerry Falwell, who was then the chancellor of Liberty University.

When he noticed my Virginia Tech clothing he said, “Liberty will beat Virginia Tech in football in seven years.”

My response was, “Liberty won’t even play Virginia Tech in football within seven years, and you won’t live long enough to see them beat Virginia Tech.”

Well, it turns out I was right on both counts.

On Sept. 3, Liberty will play Virginia Tech for the first time. It will be Coach Justin Fuente’s first game as Virginia Tech’s new football coach.

I encourage Longwood University folks to go to the game and support their fellow Big South Conference school. Since it is the Hokies’ first game, and since it is the first matchup between Virginia Tech and Liberty, tickets should be available.

Since football is a possibility in Longwood’s future, this will be an opportunity to see what it might be like if Longwood were ever to play Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium.
