Democratic Party will honor Barbara Johns

RICHMOND — The Democratic Party of Virginia will honor the late Barbara Rose Johns on Saturday, Feb. 20, in Richmond.

A panel discussion, hosted by the party, will be held in the SunTrust Building Auditorium, 919 E. Main St., in Richmond.

According to an email from the party, the panel will feature Prince Edward County Commonwealth’s Attorney Megan Clark, former Herald Editor Ken Woodley, Moton Museum Council Chair Dorothy Holcomb, Brown Virginia Founder Jasper Hendricks and Virginia State University professor Dr. Warren Holmes.

The panel will focus on “how her courageousness can inspire us as we work to advance civil rights across the commonwealth.”

Johns led a historic student strike at the then-R.R. Moton High School, protesting substandard conditions at the segregated school. Davis v. Prince Edward, which followed the 1951 strike, was included in the Brown v. Board of Education suit before the U.S. Supreme Court.
