C.H. ‘Mike’ Lafoon

C.H. “Mike” Lafoon, 86, of Farmville, passed away on Monday, February 22, 2016. He was born in Farmville on August 24, 1929 to the late Alwyn O. and Lucille Harris Lafoon. He graduated from Farmville High School in 1947 having lettered in football, baseball, basketball and was captain of the football team in 1946. As a teenager he had numerous weekend and summer jobs such as paper routes, working at his father’s service station, department store, grocery store etc. He started working in the construction business with his father in September 1947, building homes and light commercial buildings and worked up to estimator and superintendent.

“Mike” served in the Virginia National Guard, Co. G, 116th Infantry, 29th Division 1948-1957 attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. Mr. Lafoon joined the Farmville Jaycees in 1951, participating in numerous community projects. He brought the first Christmas Parade to Farmville, using professional floats. He was one of the 10 men to organize and build the little league field introducing little league baseball to Farmville in 1959. He became licensed as a Real Estate Broker in the Commonwealth of Virginia on February 29, 1960 and has been owner and president of Longwood Realty Company Inc. since 1960 and owner and president of Coldwell Banker Lafoon Realty Inc. since 1988.

Mr. Lafoon became president of the Farmville Jaycees in 1962 and recipient of the Distinguished Service Award in 1964 and awarded Life Membership in 1965. He designed and built his present home in 1964-1965 and served on the Farmville Office of Sovran Bank Board in 1969 to 1988. He was president of the South Central Board of Realtors in 1970 and was recipient of the Realtor of the Year Award in 1991, and was a graduate of The Realtors Institute in 1972. He served on the Southside Community Hospital Board for 37 years and served as Board President from 1988 to 1992. “Mike” was a Board Member and Board Chairman of First Federal Savings Bank, aka First Federal Savings and Loan from 1978 to 2000. He served on Farmville Town Council for 25 years and served as Vice Mayor for two years. “Mike” was the recipient of the President’s Circle award in 1993 from Coldwell Banker for achieving Outstanding Sales Performance.

He was a past President of the Farmville Area Development Corporation, a member of the Farmville Chamber of Commerce and an active member of Farmville United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Hamilton Lafoon; a son, Carlton Harris Lafoon Jr. “Kip” (Joanne) of Farmville; a daughter Lisa L. Lloyd (H. Richard) of Bumpass; four grandchildren, Karli L. Seefried (Dan) of Midlothian, Carlton Harris Lafoon III “Shayne” of Arlington, Benjamin Lee Hunter Lafoon of Farmville and Carlton Lee Lloyd of Bumpass; two great-grandchildren, Phoenix Ryan Seefried and Maddox Bayne Seefried. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Marion Randolph Lafoon and Alwyn Otis Lafoon Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 26 at 11 a.m. in Farmville United Methodist Church with interment at Westview Cemetery.
