Two Longwood University men’s basketball standout players have not dressed out for the Lancers’ last two games.

Senior guard Leron Fisher, of Baltimore, and freshman forward/guard Chris Shields, of Hedgesville, W.Va., did not play in Longwood’s home game against Gardner-Webb on Saturday or Wednesday’s home game against Presbyterian.

According to Longwood Assistant Vice President for Athletics Communications Chris Cook, both players sat out during the Gardner-Webb game “due to a coach’s decision.”

Cook declined The Herald’s request to interview Longwood head coach Jayson Gee about the players’ status.

Fisher, who has played in 11 out of 17 games this season, averages 28.9 minutes of playing time each game. He has scored 106 points for the Lancers this season, including season highs of 18 points on three occasions. He averages 9.6 points per game.

He had the most playing time on the team in seven of the 11 games. Fisher missed the first three games of the season “due to a team-issued suspension related to a violation of team rules,” according to Cook.

“We made that announcement on Nov. 6. That suspension would fall under the designation of a ‘coach’s decision,’” he said.

Fisher was a member of Gee’s first recruiting class at Longwood University.

Shields, one of five true freshmen on the team, has played in 14 games this season, averaging 21 minutes per game and scoring 95 points on the season.

He scored a season-high 19 points against Maine in November. He averages 6.8 points per game.

Longwood (4-13) will return home to host Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. Saturday.
