Don’t blame the gun

In response to “Qualifications should determine ownership of certain weapons” (Friday, Dec. 25), my question is, do you want to have to write an essay, take a test and be over 30 before you can defend yourself or family from a robbery, mass shooting, ex-husband or ex-wife?
The list goes on.
Maybe we should limit all the qualifications needed to sign up to protect others and focus on a way to support our fellow officers and concentrate on why we are where we are rather than blaming a piece of steel for our own life choices.
Passing a law to get to know your neighbors seems like a better idea to me.
An essay describing them would be even better. They could be entered into a monthly database, searching for keywords like trust, love and maybe hate, depending on if you’re looking for the good guys or the bad guys.
