Civil War historian John Quarstein will deliver a dramatic presentation on the ironclad warship USS Monitor at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park on Sunday at 2 p.m. Quarstein is director of the USS Monitor Center and Foundation at the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News. He will share details of the tragic last days of the Monitor that sank off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., during a violent storm on New Year’s Eve, 1862 — just 11 months after it first got underway. The lecture will be held in the Battlefield Visitor Center. Admission is free to this family-friendly event.
