Hampden-Sydney conducts Care for Kids campaign

Hampden-Sydney College students recently collected almost $9,000 for clothing and toys as a part of their H-SC Cares for Kids campaign.

The college’s Lambda Chapter of the national honorary leadership society, Omicron Delta Kappa, coordinated the fundraising efforts and teamed up with the student court, student senate, the basketball team, student government, and the social fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha. Each group collaborated to provide for children in need this holiday season.

These organizations, along with the H-SC Office of Student Affairs, worked with Prince Edward County schools and parents to identify each child’s needs — like clothing or a jacket — and wants, such as toys or books. Over the past four years, students, faculty, and staff have made this program possible by providing donations, spending hours shopping and working to wrap each gift.

Sandy Cooke, director of Student Affairs Operations and Civic Engagement, said “The Cares for Kids program is a great cause because it enhances our relationship with the community. The students learn to be a part of something bigger than themselves, and it is heartwarming to know that we are assisting families right here at home.”

This year, 300 children received at least one outfit, a toy, and a book in their gift packages.
