Published 2:20 pm Thursday, December 3, 2015
On Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Tiger Inn, the Hampden-Sydney College American Acoustic Music Series will present an exciting musical crossover. The Who’s rock opera “Tommy” will be performed through the strings and vocals of progressive bluegrass band The HillBenders.
“The Who’s Tommy: a Bluegrass Opry” is a full 75-minute show covering the original Who album with video accompaniment and audience participation. The Who’s “Tommy” is the biggest rock opera of all time. Now 45 years after its original release, this show pays tribute to the classic as a full-length bluegrass performance featuring The HillBenders from Springfield, Mo.
The group’s music bridges the gap between the common music consumer and the bluegrass genre, selecting material that defies any hillbilly stigmas.
Conceived and produced by SXSW co-founder and longtime musician/producer Louis Jay Meyers, this bluegrass opry brings a new perspective to “Tommy” while paying total respect to its creators. With a perfect mix of virtuoso musicianship and rock star vocals, The HillBenders bring this classic rock original to life in a new and exciting way.
The group has been named “one of the 50 Best Things We Saw at SXSW 2015” by Rolling Stone Magazine.
