Edward Burnelle Lightfoot Sr.

Edward Burnelle Lightfoot Sr., 80, of New Canton, went home to be with the lord on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 surrounded by his loving family at his home. Born April 8, 1935, the son of the late Aubrey Clyde Lightfoot Sr. and Nannie Pearl Snoddy Lightfoot.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Anne Birckhead Lightfoot, fondly known as “Mama Anne”. He leaves behind his beloved children, Edward B. Lightfoot Jr. “Eddie” and Lisa Lightfoot Dunkum (Marvin Jr.); grandchildren, Tanya Lightfoot Bickford (Brad ), Timothy Matthew Lightfoot , and Mackenzie Anne Dunkum (Brett Gormus); great-grandchildren, Madelyn Blair Bickford, Emma Grace Bickford, Wyatt Brady Bickford, and Clayton Matthew Lightfoot; two brothers, Aubrey W. Lightfoot and A.C. Lightfoot (Becky); sister-in-law, Rose Marie Birckhead Hess (Barry); stepsister, Linda H. Christian (Dwight), and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a loving daughter-in-law, Sharon Kearney Lightfoot, a brother, Alvin Wallace Lightfoot, and his stepmother whom he absolutely adored, Alice H. Lightfoot.
Mr. Lightfoot was a dedicated family man. He was also dedicated to his work. He was a self-employed roofer specializing in “slate” for greater than 50 years prior to his retirement. He was a man of very few words but the words he spoke were of great volume. He was a man with many talents and also many nicknames. Some you may recognize: Edward, Burnelle, E.B., Grundy, Ed, Daddy, Granddaddy, Greggie, Brother, Uncle, and Friend. He had an infectious smile and was always willing to help out anyone in need. He will greatly be missed by all.
The family will receive friends at his home in New Canton on Thursday, December 3, from 12 noon to 8 pm.
A funeral service will be held, Friday, December 4 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the
burial following in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. A meal will follow in the church’s fellowship hall.
At his and “Mama Anne’s” request, he will take his last walk carried by his boys: Eddie, Marvin Jr., Matt, Brad, Brett, A.C. Barry, Thomas, Aubrey, and his little men Wyatt and Clayton.
The family would like to thank all of our family and friends for your love and support during Grundy’s courageous battle with cancer. Special thanks to Dr. Randall Bashore, Dr. David Campanelli, his nurse and girl Wendy Tolbert, RN and the staff at Central Virginia Community Health Center, Delta Response Team for their compassionate care during his treatments, UVA: Dr. Paul Read, Dr. James Reibel, Dr. Zequan Yang, Dr. Katherine Fedder, Dr. Elizabeth Gaughan , and all of their staff, Continuum Home Care, and Dr. Brian Showalter and staff of the MJH Wound Care Clinic.
