Published 12:59 pm Wednesday, December 30, 2015
On Saturday, Jan. 16, from noon-midnight, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum will host its annual all-day Birthday Bash in honor of the 207th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe’s birth. The 12-hour party will showcase live music, readings, crafts, presentations by James River Writers and Sisters in Crime, walking tours, a cash bar featuring Center of the Universe Brewing, the first-ever Tell-Tale Writing Awards, birthday cake and a champagne toast at midnight. Admission is $5 per person for an all-day ticket.
Edgar Allan Poe himself will participate in a very special edition of James River Writers’ popular series “The Writing Show,” discussing ways to jump start creativity. Poe’s mother, Eliza, and his childhood sweetheart, Elmira Shelton, will also be on hand for the festivities. Mrs. Eliza Poe will guide visitors on a tour of Shockoe Bottom with a stop at the oldest continuously-used Masonic Lodge in the country, while Mrs. Shelton will lead a tour of Church Hill with a stop at historic St. John’s Church.
The Tell-Tale Writing Awards will recognize winners of the Poe Museum and James River Writers’ short poetry and flash fiction contest. The theme of the contest is “Poe Inspires” and the submission deadline is Jan. 3, 2016. For information on how to participate, please contact the Poe Museum or James River Writers.
The Poe Museum is located at 1914 E. Main Street, Richmond. For more information visit poemuseum.org, write info@poemuseum.org or call the museum at (804) 648-5523.
