Recently there has been much discussion concerning the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP). Being a resident of Buckingham County, I encourage our board of supervisors to support the pipeline for the following reasons:
1. The local property tax revenue from the pipeline will amount to some $1.25 million annually for Buckingham County.
This added tax revenue will allow the board to consider stabilizing or reducing the property tax rate, which has been climbing steadily.
2. Almost 17,000 jobs will be supported by construction work on the pipeline. Of course, some of these jobs will go to Buckingham County residents. The pipeline will support long-term some 1,300 well-paying jobs.
3. All energy consumers in Virginia and North Carolina will share in an estimated $377 million annual savings in lower energy prices.
4. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, underground pipelines are the safest way to transport natural gas.
The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy wrote: “In many areas of Virginia, access to natural gas can mean the difference between a growing and vibrant economic base and one of stagnation.”
We residents of Buckingham County need the advantages of a “growing and vibrant” economy that will create well-paying jobs for current and future generations as well as add to our annual tax revenue. Cited information comes from “Powering the Future,” distributed by Dominion.
