Friday proved to be a rough night for the Cumberland Dukes as they fell 48-6 to the Nottoway High School Cougars in the Dukes’ final home game of the season.

The Cougars commanded a lead from the very beginning and did not let up for the rest of the game. The Dukes were only able to score at the end of the game on a 19-yard touchdown run by Darius Jackson.

“Obviously, we are disappointed. We didn’t come out and do what we were trying to this week,” Cumberland varsity coach Ed Knapp said.

“We struggled offensively in the first half and we didn’t tackle especially well … We played poorly and Nottoway played well. Hats off to them.“

Having eight players injured didn’t help Cumberland either.

Jackson led the Dukes with eight carries for 48 yards and a touchdown. Jamie Trent had 14 carries for 54 yards and Brandon Leabough had five carries for 26 yards. He also went 2-for-5 in passing for 22 yards.

David Deming had a reception for 15 yards.

Leabough, Dakoda Boyles, Jaylen Gilliam and Raheem Rumsey had eight tackles each. Jackson had six on the night.

Cumberland will finish out its season on Friday when the team treks to Central Lunenburg for a 7 p.m. game. This will be the Dukes’ last game, since they are not eligible for playoff contention.
