Longwood men’s basketball junior forward Damarion Geter will miss the 2015-16 season while recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, head coach Jayson Gee announced.
“We are extremely disappointed about the loss of one of our captains, Damarion Geter, for the season,” said Gee, now in his third year as head coach of the Lancers.
“Geter’s versatility, experience and defensive prowess will be missed on the floor. However, his high character and leadership abilities, as well as the platform he has with our players, will enable him to have an impact on our program despite his absence on the court. We have appointed him honorary student assistant, and we look forward to having him back in the fold next season.”
A native of Dayton, Ohio, and a Big South All-Academic Team selection, Geter was voted team captain as a sophomore in 2014-15 and started 31 of 34 games.
The 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward averaged 1.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while shooting .580 (29-of-50) from the field to help Longwood advance to the Big South semifinals for the first time in program history.
A member of Gee’s first recruiting class at Longwood, Geter has played in every game of his career and represented the university at the Big South Leadership Conference in Black Mountain, N.C., this past July.
Longwood men’s basketball opens the 2015-16 season this Saturday, Nov. 7, in a home exhibition matchup against Division III Hampden-Sydney at 7 p.m.
