County educator Charles “Chuck” Meek has announced his candidacy for the District Three seat on the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors.

According to a press release, Meek, an independent candidate, has been a teacher and coach for the past 30 years, teaching all ages of students in both physical and special education in Buckingham County.

Meek will face D.R. “Don” Matthews, a Republican, on the Nov. 3 ballot.

“As supervisor in Buckingham, I look forward to using the county’s resources in bringing businesses and jobs to our residences. I hope to work with all governing agencies and individuals to keep providing quality roads, schools, rescue squads and fire departments,” the candidate said in the release.

“He received his degree in health/physical education from Longwood College in 1984.  He received his endorsement in special education in 1995 from University of South Florida,” stated the release.

Meek, according to the release, is an active member of

Chestnut Grove Baptist Church and has served on the deacon’s board since 2003. 

“He is an active member of the Chestnut Grove Baptist Brotherhood which does community service projects throughout the county.  He has worked with the Buckingham youth soccer program since 2009.”

Meek says he was born in Norfolk in 1960, but “has been coming to Buckingham since he can remember to visit his grandparents and relatives. In 1979, he attended Longwood College and stayed in Buckingham until he met his wife, the former Julia Simmons, [who] also is a teacher in Buckingham. In 1990 they moved to Winter Haven, Florida, to be closer to her parents, and spent nine years [there] before returning to Buckingham to plant their roots.”

The Meeks have three children, Morgan, Rachel and Joshua.

Meek says he feels honored to have the chance to run for the District Three seat, which encompasses the New Store and Curdsville voting precincts.

“The people of my district have a vast range of knowledge that I can draw from in various fields.  If I am elected, I will seek their help in making the best decision in order to make Buckingham the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”
