Prince Edward County High School golfers Henry Lutz and Mark Stanley represented their school at the Region 2A East golf tournament on Tuesday at Kiskiack Golf Course in Williamsburg. Lutz place fifth, while Stanley placed 67th.
Stanley, a sophomore in only his second year on the golf team, was able to qualify for the regional tournament as a fifth-seeded individual and shot a 110.
Junior Lutz, in his third straight regional golf appearance as the number one seeded individual from Conference 34, got off to a slow start by bogeying each of his first five holes.
By digging deep, he fought his way to a six over par round of 42 for the front nine.
While continuing to fight throughout the back nine, the highlight of his day came on the par five 18th hole. After a tee shot that split the fairway over a lake, he hit a three hybrid 205 yards uphill into the breeze to a position 30 feet from the pin.
When his putt hit the center of the cup for an eagle, he completed an even par round of 36 for the back nine to give him a six over par round of 78 for the eighteen-hole tournament.
His fifth-place finish (the medalist shot a three over par 75) earned him the fifth seed on the All-Region 2A East team.
Lutz will advance as the third-seeded individual from the Region 2A East tournament to the Virginia 1A-2A state golf tournament, which was held on Monday and Tuesday at The Golden Eagle Golf Club in Irvington.
