Local residents win ribbons at the fair

Congratulations to all who participated in the Five County Fair. Mary Dimmie won blue ribbons on winter squash and pears. She also won two blue ribbons in baking: commercial cake mix cake and cornbread and a red ribbon on dill pickles. John Dimmie won three blue ribbons on his baking: banana bread, fruitcake and bar cookies.

In the Adult Flower Show Debbie Mounce won nine blue ribbons and one red ribbon. The blue ribbons were on individual specimens of zinnias of specific colors. The red ribbon was on a collection of colors of zinnias in a variety.  She also won a white ribbon on a Halloween wreath in the Crafts Section.

Kelly Womack won first and reserve grand champion with her Flemish Giant rabbit.  She also took two first places with her beef heifer.

Jordan and Cal Smith and Kelly Womack also entered pieces of artwork and won several blue ribbons. Along with their cousin, Chase Grubbs, they entered pumpkins, rye, barley, soybeans, corn, hay and silage from the family farms, Woodville Farm and Forkland Farms.  Chase won tallest corn stalk. Brooke, Bridget, Henry, and Harold Landis also entered several crop exhibits such as hay, shelled and ear corn, stalks of corn and small grains.

The Dairy Show winners were pictured in a special article in The Herald on Friday, Oct. 2, page B7.  Caroline Seal won grand champion with a 4-year-old dry cow in the Holstein department, and she also won two first places and two seconds showing her heifers with Forkland Farms. Kelly Womack won three first places with her dairy heifers.

The reserve champion winner in the Dairy Show was Bridgette Landis with a junior yearling heifer. The Landis family of Pencrest Farm including Brooke, Bridget, Henry and Harold were also winners in the showmanship category. Bridgette won a first and Brooke a third in 14-19 years old and Henry a second and Harold a third in 8-13 years old.

In other community news, Faye Asal, president of the United Methodist Women at Antioch Church, presented the Mission Recognition Pin to Becky Dorsey. The pin recognizes an individual who shares their time and talents and also represents a gift to mission from the group.

Reports on recent mission trips were given to the Antioch UM Church congregation. Holly Tillett, Penny Dorsey, Brooke Lozano, Mackenzie Morris and Samanth Tillett reported on their youth mission trip in Virginia.  Colleen Meiser told of the medical mission trip to Honduras. 

Marjo Mullins and Faye Asal represented Antioch Women at the annual district meeting in Blackstone on Sept. 23.  Margaret Atkinson, Shirley Martin and Pattie Pedrick attended from Payne Memorial.  Also attending were Geraldine Sanderson from Centenary, installing officer, and Rev. Rich Meiser, Antioch minister.
