Injured Falcons look for win over Seahawks

Only two games are left in the regular season for each area team, and as one can imagine all teams will be working hard to secure two last wins before the playoffs begin.

For some, this is make-or-break time for advancing to the playoffs. For others, it is a chance to improve their playoff position.

Cumberland is the only local team that, as of now, will not make the playoffs.

Fuqua (3-4) vs. Atlantic SHores (7-0)

Fuqua has lost its last three games as the team has suffered without the aid of several injured players, including quarterback Devin Allen and running back Tyler Frink.

Although Frink will most likely be able to play Friday, Allen will probably continue to be out, according to Fuqua varsity football coach Ben Manis.

“I am waiting to hear back from the doctor on Devin and Frink this week. I got about six kids who have been banged up for the season,” said Manis.

“It has been a rough season for the guys and they have played through it and haven’t quit yet.”

When in comes to the playoffs, Fuqua is still in the mix to make it.

“We have to win one of the next two games (Atlantic Shores or Broadwater) to make the playoffs,” Manis said. “It will be interesting to see how the next two weeks pan out.”

Buckingham (7-1) at R-H (4-4)

The Buckingham Knights will trek to Charlotte County on Friday in hopes of obtaining a victory after a bye week last week. The Knights rested up after having three games in a seven-day period.

Returning to the field on Friday will be easy for the anxious Knights who are looking to improve their record and move up in the 2A West region standings before the playoff season begins.

“We are heading to Charlotte (County) to take on a good Statesmen team,” said Buckingham varsity football coach Craig Gill. “The Statesmen have quarterback Joseph Reed that we will have to keep our eyes on closely so that we can slow him down.”

The Knights are pretty secure when it comes to the playoffs as they stand in the No. 2 slot in Courthouse Conferece 37. The team will still want to notch another victory to maintain its high ranking.

Cumberland (2-4) vs. Nottoway (1-7)

Unfortunately for the Dukes, the decision to not play Goochland or Buckingham this season rules the team out of playoff contention.

Nottoway has had a rough season as it stands at the bottom of the James River District and Quad Rivers Conference 34 rankings. However, their 42-0 win over Cumberland last season is keeping their hopes up for Friday’s matchup.

Prince Edward (3-5) vs. goochland (5-2)

Prince Edward will have a bye on Friday, but will return on Monday night when they host Goochland.

Even though Goochland is known for its challenging football program, the team has suffered this year to teams that usually do not fair out well against the Bulldogs.

If Goochland continues to play at a less than normal performance, the Eagles will give the Bulldogs a run for their money.

The Eagles will rely on standout player Delquan Bigelow to help Prince Edward to push past Goochland. In last Friday’s game against Randolph-Henry, Bigelow rushed for 361 yards.
