On Sept. 19 the Friends of the Appomattox River (FAR) conducted a Fall River Cleanup of selected waterways around Farmville.  The sites included sections of the Appomattox River, Buffalo Creek, Briery Creek Lake and Sandy River Reservoir. Fourteen volunteers (including two Longwood students) collected 20 bags of trash and 10 car tires totaling approximately 605 pounds. Nearly 3.43 miles of shoreline were cleaned. Among the most unusual items were Christmas lights, a broken bathroom sink, a white laboratory coat and automobile trim work. This effort was part of the 2015 International Coastal Cleanup and the Clean Virginia Waterways Cleanup.  The Town of Farmville provided trashcans for the refuse that was collected.
