Facing the facts

The fact of the matter is this: The Herald is in the accuracy business.
In John Jamieson’s guest column “Voter ID necessary for sound elections,” published on this page on Friday, several inaccuracies were published.
Jamieson presented several statistics regarding voter turnout and participation in the 2012 presidential election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, supporting elements of alleged voter fraud.
The fact is that the statistics supporting his claims were wrong. The Annenburg Public Policy Center’s Factcheck.org, a reputable resource for sorting fact from fiction in the political arena, debunks the claims.
We apologize for allowing inaccurate information on this page, which is intended to offer a diversity of local opinions about issues in our communities, state, nation and world.
And, believe it when we say that we take this sort of thing very, very seriously.
The opinion page of a newspaper is just that — a place for opinions and thoughts on issues, actions and events, not a page for unsupported “facts” and claims.
We seek and encourage you to send us your opinions no matter where they fall on the political spectrum. We want to hear your voice and see your words. Email us letters, guest columns and your thoughts to editor@farmvilleherald.com. If you use a fact to support your opinion, be sure to attribute it to a reputable source.
It’s our job to offer the facts and you have our word that we’ll continue to do it and do it well.
