Earl Raymond Spillman, Jr.

Earl Raymond Spillman Jr., 87, died Friday, October 9, 2015 at Sunnyside Retirement Community where he resided for the last 13 years with his wife and the love of his life, Marilyn W. Spillman.  They had just celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

Earl was born in Cumberland County on February 25, 1928 to the late Earl and Anna Marie Spillman.

  He proudly served in the Virginia State Guard during World War II and was a Corporal in the U.S. Army completing two tours of duty during the Korean War.  Earl was a passionate horticulturalist, being the President of the Richmond Nurseryman’s Association and later retiring from Southern States in 1990.   He was a lifelong Baptist and served as a Deacon at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Richmond and was Chairman of Deacons at First Baptist Church of Eustis, FL.  Earl was a beloved volunteer at Florida Hospital Waterman and an active member of the Harrisonburg Kiwanis Club.

Earl is survived by his wife, Marilyn W. Spillman; his daughters, Cynthia Spillman of Leesburg FL, and Janet Parr and her husband, Kenneth of Coconut Creek, FL; a son, Earl R. Spillman III and his wife, Debbie; three grandsons, Christopher, Alex and the late Connor Spillman; sisters, Betty Lee Young and Jean Watlington of Harrisonburg; brothers, Alfred Spillman of Farmville and Wesley Spillman of Palmyra. Earl was preceded in death by his sister, Anabel Burton of Harrisonburg and brother, Charles Spillman of Farmville.   

Memorial contributions may be made to Sunnyside Retirement Communities Fellowship Fund, 600 University Blvd., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

A memorial service will be held at the Sunnyside Chapel in Harrisonburg on Wednesday, October 14, at 11 a.m.  Interment will be at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Farmville at a later date.
