H-SC rolls to 55-24 win over Ferrum

The Hampden-Sydney College football team improved to 2-1 on the season and did so in dramatic fashion, defeating Ferrum College 55-24 at Franklin County High School. Junior quarterback Edgar Moore (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School) threw for five touchdowns with no turnovers in the effort. Kyree Koonce (Charlottesville/Monticello) and Cam Johnson (Dillwyn/Buckingham) combined for five scores. Hampden-Sydney now enters its bye week before beginning conference play next month.

The Tigers got off to the races early and never looked back, scoring on their first drive in just three plays and 34 seconds. The big plays continued into the second quarter with Koonce running for a 53-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. The Tigers were unstoppable for the rest of the game.

On the day, the Tigers tallied 528 yards of offense with 315 passing and 213 rushing. Moore was 15-of-26 for 268 yards and five touchdowns. Koonce had 175 yards of offense behind 124 rushing yards and two touchdowns on ten carries and 51 receiving yards and a touchdown on two receptions.

Michael Mey had four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown, while Johnson recorded 105 yards and a score on two receptions. Perryman had three catches for 25 yards and a score. Defensively, Larry Haskins (Buckingham/Fuqua) recorded a game-high 11 tackles. As a unit, the Tigers had eight stops in the backfield for a total loss of 20 yards. They also recovered three fumbles.

The Tigers will return to action Saturday, Oct. 3 as they host Catholic University of America at 1 p.m.
