- Educators from four county school systems recently attended a workshop of fishing at Longwood University.
While new Physical Education Standards of Learning emphasize lifetime activities it is difficult to implement new ideas without equipment. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VGDIF) is a terrific resource, providing training and equipment to schools at no charge.
Recently, 13 educators from four area schools systems, Cumberland, Mecklenburg, Nottoway and Prince Edward participated in a Fishing Education Workshop at Longwood University. They learned how to organize a class, teach casting and arrange field trips. Each school system also received $1,500 in equipment for their respective schools. The equipment included 40 rods, 50 reels, 50+ plastic fish and tub of accessories. Most of the teachers plan to begin using the equipment this fall.
Janet Green, health and physical Educator at PECHS, said, “I haven’t fished since I was very young, so this clinic was an amazing adventure. I can see so many ways to utilize the information for my physical education and health classes as well as many of the other disciplines. I hope to organize a field trip with my advanced physical education class. The generous donation of so much equipment and resources will enrich the classroom learning in leaps and bounds!”
The program was organized by Vonnie Colvin, program coordinator for health and physical education at Longwood University. An Archery Workshop conducted by VDGIF is planned for area physical education teachers on Oct. 24. Any area physical educators who are interested in this workshop should contact colvin@longwood.edu as soon as possible as space is limited.
