Longwood junior Anna Pelak picked up a win and advanced to the round of 32 at the 2015 Summer ITA Northeast Regional at Cornell University last week.
Pelak, who was Longwood’s No. 2 singles player as a sophomore in 2014-15, upended Cornell’s Kristin Quill 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 on Quill’s home court at the Reis Tennis Center. Pelak’s victory marked only the second loss for Quill in the past year. The Cornell junior went 6-1 as a sophomore for the Big Red, including 2-0 in spring duals play.
Pelak’s week came to an end in the round of 32 at the hands of Laurel Shymansky, 6-2, 6-2.
A McLean, Va., native, Pelak made the jump from No. 4 to No. 2 singles for her sophomore season and owned that spot the entire year. She went 5-17 in that role with four of those victories coming within the final month of the season to cap her year with a 4-6 record.
Pelak is one of four returning starters for the Longwood women this season and the team’s highest-ranked returning player. The Lancers open the 2015 fall campaign on Sept. 12 at the George Mason Invitational.
