The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) today announced the third annual Team Academic Excellence Awards, created by the NABC Committee on Academics.

These awards, earned by more than 175 colleges and universities, recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2014-15 season.

The Hampden-Sydney basketball was recognized as the 17-man team maintained a 3.13 team GPA for the academic year.

Individually, the team had six members earn Academic All-ODAC honors, with Nick Chase (Wilmington, N.C./Coastal Christian), Gui Guimarães (Ribeirão Preto, Brazil/Miller), Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek), Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover), Will Scott (Virginia Beach, Va./Cornell), and Alex Smith (Whitsett, N.C./T. Wingate Andrews) all carrying at least a 3.25 GPA for the year.

In order to earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in NCAA Divisions I, II, III, and NAIA Divisions I and II must count the grade point averages of all men’s student-athletes who competed during the 2014-15 season.
