CUMBERLAND, June 9 — Michael F. Christy, 61, of Cumberland and formerly of Lynchburg, died peacefully in his sleep Sunday, June 7, 2015 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Mr. Christy was a graduate and staunch supporter of Virginia Tech, an avid gardener and a great friend to all animals. He has never been without a garden or pets. He also held in great esteem Native American culture and art.

He was the father of Jason Christy Capt. USMC, Jonathan Christy Sgt. USMC Ret., and Collins Christy and the proud grandfather of Cain Hilston Christy. The son of the late Francis J. Schavone, he is survived by his mother, Beverly R. Schavone of Meredith, NH, and his beloved sister, Stephanie Sinclair, her husband, Donnie, and his other siblings, Darla Brown, John Schavone, and Michele Thomas, as well as close friends, Elaine Dameron and Betty Jo Harding, and many other special relatives and friends.

A small reception for friends and family is planned for the evening of Thursday, June 11. The reception will be held in Lynchburg, please contact the family via email (mfchrist2@gmail.com) if you wish to attend or share condolences.

His sons request donations or assistance be given to the Wildlife Center of Virginia or to the Lynchburg Humane Society in memoriam of Mr. Christy.
