On Sunday, March 8, Hampden-Sydney College will host a back gallery lecture entitled “The Pursuit: Frederic Remington & the Buffalo Soldiers.” The guest speaker will be Elizabeth O’Leary from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Few artists are as closely associated with the American West as Frederic Remington (1861 – 1909). Best known for his illustrations, bronze sculptures, and paintings of cowboys, he also found a favorite subject in U.S. Cavalrymen, especially the hard-riding soldiers of the 9^th and 10^th Regiments, known also as Buffalo Soldiers. This lecture explores Remington’s images of these renowned African American regiments and, in particular, his striking canvas, “The Pursuit” (1896 – 98) in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ collection.

Dr. Elizabeth L. O’Leary, retired associate curator of American Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, earned her B.A. in art history at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in art history at the University of Virginia. Her current projects include an upcoming exhibition about Robinson House, the 1850’s farmhouse on the VMFA campus.

The lecture begins at 3 p.m. in the Atkinson Museum and is free and open to the community. This event is co-sponsored by Central Virginia Arts and the Atkinson Museum; it has been organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and is supported, in part, by the Paul Mellon Endowment and the Jean Stafford Camp Memorial Fund.
