Town Considers A Community Christmas Tree

FARMVILLE — Never mind the Whos down in Whoville. If town council member Sally Thompson gets her Yule-time wish, Farmville will have a community Christmas tree and tree-lighting this year.
So far, the notion has been Grinch-free, not a Mount Crumpit resident in sight.
“I’m feeling out different people,” she told town council last week. “People are excited about it.”
Thompson chairs town council’s Community Development and Marketing committee and reported that she and members Armstead D. Reid and Dan Dwyer would be talking to people in the community about moving forward with the idea.
“Time is of the essence for this project,” noted Mayor David E. Whitus.
Thompson’s vision sees the entire community pitching in to buy and decorate the tree—groups, organizations, and individuals joining hands and hearts.
“We’d all put a bit of money into getting it,” Thompson said.
Looking toward decorating the tree with the same community spirit, she said, “Schools would have ornaments that they could put on the tree.”
Children could make ornaments, too.
“It needs to be a community tree,” she said, inviting Prince Edward County to join hands with the Town of Farmville. “It needs to be something that we’re all involved in.”
Ideally, Thompson pointed out, the Christmas tree would be placed at the plaza where High Bridge Trail State Park crosses North Main Street.
“The most visible location,” Thompson explained.
And she agreed with Mayor Whitus.
“Time is of the essence.”
