HOV Farmer's Market To Hold Gingerbread House Contest

The Heart of Virginia Farmer’s Market Association (HOVFMA) will hold a Gingerbread House Competition on December 6, 2014 during market hours at the STEPS Centre parking lot. The competition will be judged by a group of judges and visitors to the market can vote for their favorites as well. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.
Categories for the competition include: Child – Individuals between the ages of five and eight; Youth – Individuals between the ages of nine and 12; Teen – Individuals between the ages of 13 and 17; Adult – Individuals 18 years of age and older; Teams of two or more persons
Entries must be constructed and composed of edible materials. The main structure must be at least 75% gingerbread. An exception will be made for the Child Category where graham crackers may be substituted for the gingerbread in the construction. No entries will be accepted using Gingerbread Kits.
Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: Overall Appearance,Originality and Creativity,Use of Materials/Difficulty; Best Use of Theme which is “Home is Where the ♥ Is.”
Interested individuals or teams can pick up a brochure and registration form at the Heart of Virginia Farmer’s Market during market hours (Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon) at the STEPS Centre parking lot (225 Industrial Park Road, Farmville).
“We’re really excited to be holding this competition,” says Christy Callas, a farmer at the market. “We want to get the word out early, so everyone has an opportunity to plan their design and make their entry piece. It would be really cool to see team entries from our local colleges, businesses, or volunteer fire and rescue squads. And we’re especially pleased to have a Child’s Category to allow the younger children, ages five to eight, in the area to participate.”
