PRINCE EDWARD — Potential candidates interested in the Prospect District seat on Prince Edward County’s Board of Supervisors will have a small window to get their political ducks in order.
Those being nominated by parties or running as an independent have until 5 p.m. August 15 to get their names in the hat in time to appear on the ballot for the November 4 election.
Howard “Pete” Campbell, elected to a second term in November, passed away earlier this month and fellow supervisors met last week and appointed Calvin L. Gray to serve in the interim. Gray is leaning towards running for the seat in November.
Whoever voters choose will serve the remainder of Mr. Campbell’s term, until December 31, 2017.
Potential candidates have options for getting their names on the ballot. Parties can meet and select a candidate, with party chairperson certifying that candidate. Independent candidates would need to collect 125 signatures via petition of eligible voters in the district.
County supervisors had collectively petitioned the Court that a special election be ordered for November 4 to fill the vacancy. Circuit Court Judge Kimberly S. White issued the writ of Special Election July 16.
