HARRISONBURG — Hampden-Sydney rising sophomore pitcher Trevor Otey (Williamsburg/Christchurch School) was named an Honorable Mention Player of the Week in the Valley Baseball League (VBL) for the week of June 2.
Otey is a member of the Charles Town Cannons and boasts a 2-1 record with a 5.02 ERA in three starts. He's struck out 12 and walked ten in 14.1 innings pitched. He was selected as an Honorable Mention Player of the Week after recording a victory in the Cannons' 6-4 win over the Strasburg Express. He allowed three runs, just one earned, on four hits in five innings of work with four strikeouts and three walks.
The Valley League plays a 44-game season in the Shenandoah Valle. The wooden-bat collegiate summer league, which dates from 1923, is sanctioned by the NCAA, funded in part by a grant with Major League Baseball, and affiliated with the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball. Valley League has produced well over 1,000 professional baseball players. Last year, 27 Valley League alumni were playing in the Major Leagues. In the 2014 MLB Draft, 48 former players, including one current player, were drafted.
For the Tigers, Otey made an immediate impact, starting in nine of his 15 appearances with a 5-2 record. He posted a 3.86 ERA with 43 strikeouts to 17 walks in 60.2 innings of work.
