Mayorial And Town Council Elections Need To Be Competitive

Editor, The Herald:
These are critical economic times for Farmville. We need a group of candidates to provide creative and innovative ideas for our economic security, public safety and a long-term strategic plan. We need candidates to run with no perceived conflict of interest and that are fiscal conservatives. The current status quo is not acceptable.
We are paying for a golf course, banquet hall and airport we cannot afford. We need a whole new focus on economic development. We have some overvalued assets that hopefully can be sold to reduce long-term debt and create new small business. Farmville needs some new housing with an affordable price range.
This is the time for town leaders to impose fiscal austerity on itself, not raise taxes on citizens.
If town leaders are going to cut water/sewer prices for the regional prison they must cut it for everyone.
If anyone runs unopposed it defeats the democratic process and is due to chronic apathy by our community. June elections held during summer vacations should be on the ballot for repeal by voters.
