Joyce Gillespie Whitlock

SEPTEMBER 19 — Joyce Gillespie Whitlock passed away peacefully Monday, September 16, 2013, with her children and husband by her side after a long illness. She was born in Washington, DC on June 11, 1940. She graduated from Appomattox High School and Longwood College and taught elementary school for seven years in Richmond and Virginia Beach.

Mrs. Whitlock loved her children and grandchildren and took great pride in their many achievements. She enjoyed reading, traveling, playing bridge, being in her garden club, and she especially loved her Sunday school class at Farmville United Methodist Church. Her many friends were dear to her. She was a member of said church where she taught an exercise class for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, James L. Whitlock; children, William Ferrell Whitlock and Ann Leigh Whitlock, both of Midlothian; and two grandchildren, Joshua Anderson Whitlock and Cory Ann Whitlock, both of North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her father, William Adams Gillespie, J.D., her mother, Wynona Ferrell Anderson, stepfather, Dr. James Harold Anderson and brother, Larry Anderson.

A private burial with immediate family will be held Friday, September 19 at Westview Cemetery.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at said church Saturday, September 28 at 11 a.m.
