FARMVILLE – The Longwood University baseball team needed to go to extra innings, but pulled out one last home victory for their head coach with a 3-2 victory over the University of Richmond on Tuesday night at Bolding Stadium.

Longwood junior captain Scott Burkett came through twice for the Lancers in the tenth to not only pick up the victory, after being called on to pitch in the top of the tenth, but provide the game-winning single to score freshman Colton Knovicka in the bottom of the inning.

A dramatic conclusion to both the game and Bolding's career at the stadium that bears his name.

“He's one of our captains,” said Bolding. He knows how to compete and do what he needs to do in order to get the job done. It's a special win for this team, and for me, and it's nice to get the win tonight, but we're really looking toward this weekend.”

The Lancers (22-24) will travel to Presbyterian for their BSC finale. A series victory could put them in good position for one of eight spots in the Big South Tournament.

Longwood jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior captain Matt Dickason and Burkett singled and scored on a two-run double by junior Alex Owens.

The Lancers held onto the slim lead until the fourth inning when the Spiders (28-20) scored two runs to tie the contest at two apiece. Nick Poulos lined a hard shot just off the glove of a diving shortstop in shallow left field to score Bret Williams and Aaron Newman.

The two teams traded missed scoring opportunities the rest of the way, until the tenth inning. Dylan Caruso pitched 4.2 shutout innings, before giving up a single in the top of the tenth and giving way to Burkett.

“Richmond is a really good ball club,” said Bolding. “They were a power back when they were in the CAA, and they've had some success in the A-10. This year, they're one of the better teams in that league, and they've done it while having to play one of the toughest schedules in the conference. We can feel good that we beat a good team tonight.”

A game scheduled for Wednesday at Norfolk State University was rained out, and will not be made up. The Lancers will play single games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the first of the three-game series to begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, to be followed by a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.

Longwood will wrap-up regular-season play on May 15 at Old Dominion.
