BUCKINGHAM – What better way to usher in June than a June Jubilee.
Historic Buckingham and the Buckingham Chamber of Commerce are hosting the very first Buckingham June Jubilee on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Historic Village at Lee Wayside.
Admission for adults is a donation of $3. Children 12 years of age and under will be admitted free. Proceeds will benefit the Historic Village.
June Jubilee offers local arts and crafts, games and activities for the kids, rides on the Mule Team Wagon and pony rides. Local non-profit organizations will be selling food and beverages.
The new Village Stage will offer a great venue for gospel and bluegrass music with performances by local bands including Dixie Hill Grass, More Than Blessed, and Red Clay.
Throughout the Historic Village, there will be exhibits and demonstrations. And, the Blacksmith Shop will be open with working blacksmiths demonstrating their craft. Antique cars and trucks will also be on display. And, you'll be able to see a bateau that will be participating in the upcoming James River Bateau Festival.
WWII re-enactors portraying the 29th INF Div LHG in Normandy will also be on-hand. This group of young soldiers became widely known as the Bedford Boys.
Parking will be available at Buckingham County High School with free shuttle service to the Historic Village.
Please note that no food or coolers can be brought into the park. However, you are encouraged to bring along those camp/lawn chairs and/or blankets to sit on while you listen to the great music.
The Historic Village at Lee Wayside is located just off Route 60, W. James Anderson Highway, at Lee Wayside, Route 690, Lee Wayside Road.

During June Jubilee, on Saturday, June 1, at the Historic Village at Lee Wayside, the Buckingham-Dillwyn Garden Club will be selling locally grown and nurtured plants.
If you are in the market for annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, or houseplants, you'll want to stop by this display.
Not only are all the plants from the gardens of the club's members but the prices are reasonable. And, for those of you who may be as inept as I am when it comes to really going green, club members are ready, willing, and able to offer advice on planting and caring for your purchase.
This year, the Town of Dillwyn is taking a different approach to its annual Clean Yard Contest, which will focus on residential properties in the Town.
If you are a town resident, all you need to do is spruce up that yard and wave at those council members when they walk or ride by looking for this year's winning yards.
From now through May 31, the committee will be looking for those winners so it's a great time to trim the shrubs, make sure your yard is debris free, and freshen-up the overall appearance of your property.
Four winning properties will be selected and awarded cash prizes of $25 each. There will also be certificates of appreciation awarded to yards deserving honorable mention.
The Buckingham County Youth League is now accepting registrations for players 13 and older for baseball. Cost is $55 per player. Registration forms are available at the concession stand at Gene Dixon Memorial Park.
Practices will begin soon. For more information or if you have any questions, please contact the Commissioner, Sherron Eldridge, at 983-3504 or 607-0145; or Jack Stearrett at 390-1299.
The Buckingham Unit of the Virginia Cooperative Extension and Buckingham's Safe and Stable Families Board is sponsoring three Family Field Trips this summer.
Family Field Trips offer parents/guardians an opportunity to accompany their school-age children to strengthen family bonding and communication skills while engaging in educational trips that support the Virginia Standards of Learning.
Each family pre-pays for the selected trip at least four weeks in advance to accommodate pre-planning and arrangements. Buses will be filled on first come, first served basis. And, unless there are unfilled spaces, there is a limit of one trip per family.
Families are responsible for packing picnic meals, snacks, cameras, rain gear, and other essentials used when traveling and sight-seeing.
Cost is $17 per person per trip. This fee, thanks to supplemental grant funding, will cover bus transportation and admissions. Although the fee is non-refundable, it can be transferred to another person for the specified trip. Please note that you'll want to bring extra money for meal stops, special features and/or souvenirs.
The first trip is to Washington, D. C. on Thursday, July 18, with plans to visit National Memorials and Monuments, the Old Post Office Tower, and Smithsonian Museums.
On Tuesday, August 6, the bus will head to Norfolk with plans to visit the Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe in Hampton, and Nauticus in Norfolk.
The last trip, planned for Tuesday, August 13, features Petersburg with tours of City Point, Petersburg National Battlefield, and the Siege Museum.
For more information and/or registration, call the Buckingham Extension Office at (434)969-4261.

For those who haven't heard, I'm retiring. We'll talk more about that later but yes, it's time. Along with filling my position as staff reporter, The Farmville Herald is also looking for someone to serve as a community correspondent to take over the Buckingham News column.
I figured this column would be an appropriate venue to launch the search for that community-spirited individual who wants to help keep all of us informed on the many activities and events happening here in Buckingham. For more information, contact Steve Wall at 392-4151.
